About the Role

Lila Sciences is hiring a Principal Robotics Engineer – Computer Vision to architect and deliver the perception systems driving intelligent robotics in complex, real-world lab environments. This role focuses on the full vision pipeline—sensor selection, calibration, detection, segmentation, and object recognition—ensuring high-reliability perception for autonomous platforms. The ideal candidate will collaborate across robotics, machine learning, and systems teams, playing a key role in Lila’s mission to revolutionize scientific discovery.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and implement the robotics computer vision stack for autonomous lab systems.
  • Develop perception algorithms for 3D reconstruction, object detection, pose estimation, visual tracking, and scene understanding.
  • Select, integrate, and calibrate advanced vision sensors (RGB, depth, stereo, LiDAR).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to connect perception outputs to real-time robot control systems.
  • Optimize vision algorithms for embedded and edge computing platforms to ensure runtime efficiency.
  • Conduct rigorous benchmarking to enhance perception robustness in dynamic, unstructured environments.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership on vision system design and deployment.
  • Stay current with advancements in computer vision research, translating cutting-edge techniques into production-grade solutions.
  • Contribute to the strategic roadmap and long-term vision of Lila’s robotics perception capabilities.

Required Skills

  • PhD or Master’s degree in Computer Vision, Robotics, Computer Science, or related fields.
  • 8+ years of experience deploying computer vision systems in robotics or production environments.
  • Proven expertise in visual servoing and perception systems for robotic manipulation.
  • Proficiency in both classical computer vision and deep learning-based techniques.
  • Hands-on experience building end-to-end perception pipelines for real-time robotic systems.
  • Strong coding skills in C++ and Python, with experience using OpenCV, ROS2, PyTorch/TensorFlow.
  • Deep knowledge of 3D geometry, SLAM, structure-from-motion, and multi-sensor calibration (cameras, LiDAR).
  • Strong systems-level problem-solving skills across hardware, software, and algorithms.
  • Experience with multi-sensor fusion (IMU, LiDAR, depth, vision).
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience mentoring and leading technical teams in robotics or computer vision.
  • Familiarity with deploying perception systems in autonomous labs, manufacturing, or scientific environments.
  • Background in edge AI optimizations for vision systems.
